| THE OULANKA CANYON |

In
the northern part of the Oulanka National Park, near
Savilampi, there is a steep walled canyon, the Oulanka
Canyon. Well-known rapids are Taivalköngäs, which is
crossed by a suspension bridge, and Kiutaköngäs walled
by red dolomite cliffs in the River Oulankajoki, and
Jyrävä in the River Kitkajoki.

River Oulankajoki flows into the White Sea thougth deep
walley gouged out by the river.The Kiutaköngäs
rapids-an age old natural attraction-thunder down
beetween rugged quartzite and dolomite walls, falling
13,7 metres over distance of 100 metres. The lower
reaches of the river are slow and smooth-flowing, thus
providing suitable conditions for canoeing. |
The
Karhunkierros Trail takes you through richly changing
landscapes, which range from the gentle forests of the
north to the stony riverbanks and rugged mountains of the
south. There are many small cabins and lean-tos along the
trail, in which you can take a breather or stop for the
night for free. Remember to ensure that you have all the
right equipment before you embart on your journey.
